I came across this video through a friend today:
I had An interesting experience while shooting my two minute film “The Swimming Lesson” in the fall. I filmed at the Film School Chair Barbara Boyle‘s house. When she overheard my Assistant Director sending a Production Assistant on a run for water, she soundly objected. She explained the green movement on film sets, and offered to bring us glasses and tap water instead.
One unpleasant reality of making movies is the enormous amount of garbage that film crews produce. A major portion of this is bottled water. Everything in craft services seems to have to come in an individual wrapping. Part of this is the wasteful American lifestyle (I had 4 separate recycling and garbage bins when I lived in Germany), and part of it is a mentality on set that no one has time to eat anything.
Perhaps something like Nalgene bottles, collected at the end of every day (film crews lose everything but the camera sometimes) and labelled with people’s names would help cut down on the waste. I understand that on some distant locations (the desert comes to mind) that bottled water may have to be there, but I am sure with a little thought we can kill the craft services waste machine on so many of our sets.
