Today we got to know a little bit about the retro-looking editing machines we will be cutting our two minute films on. All the films we shoot this quarter will be shot and cut on sixteen millimeter. This seems to be a beautiful, romantic process that will give us a tangible understanding of editing. A major downside is, as all things film school, the cost. We will need to purchase a splicer, various tape, and a number of other supplies. This is estimated at between $200 used and $500 new. The budget range for our two minute film is very much based on the ambitiousness of the project. I am very happy to have one of the three cinematography majors as my Director of Photography for the two minute short.
For the two minute short we are broken into teams of seven. Each person rotates through the following positions:
- Director
- Boom Operator
- Assistant Director
- Assistant Camera
- Gaffer
- Director of Photography
- Sound
I will rotate through all of these positions after we complete our preparation for the next few weeks. The rest of the day was spent playing with lights and learning about the production side of our two minute films. It will be an adventure no doubt.
